MNT Coverage : What to Expect

What diagnoses have the best MNT coverage?

One of the most common questions I receive regarding MNT coverage and insurance is: What diagnoses have the best coverage? While insurance is heavily nuanced, that is actually an easy question to answer. Preventative services have the best reimbursement overall among all significant insurance companies. When using the term best, what I am implying here is diagnoses that tend to have a high frequency of visits (>10 per year), and there is little to no cost for the patient.

Preventative Coverage for MNT

Preventative services include coverage for people with chronic diseases and those people at risk for chronic disease. So, preventative services provide MNT coverage if the patient is overweight or obese, has any form of cardiovascular disease (HTN, hyperlipidemia), metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, or has diabetes. We arrive at these diagnoses through the research used in creating the guidelines for The Affordable Care Act (ACA).

MNT coverage

My practice specializes in weight management, and I can honestly say that 98 percent of all patients we treat have excellent coverage. This is because the majority of our patients are overweight, and being overweight is always covered under the ACA and Health Care Reform. So, if you, too, are looking to work with patients who are overweight, obese, or have CVD risk factors like hypertension and diabetes, then you, too, will likely have a straightforward experience with MNT coverage.

However, I fully understand weight management is not everyone’s jam.

Therefore, I thought it would be helpful to summarize what to expect for MNT coverage for the most common things dietitians and CNSs bill for.

So, if you are interested in learning about what is covered and what is not, click play on the video below, and The Reimbursement Dietitian will sum it all up.

Ok. Cool.

That was a lot to digest.

Did you take it all in?

No worries if you didn’t.  This sh*t can be confusing.
