Ah, accepting insurance as a dietitian can be SO much fun.
When you think you’ve got everything under control, one of the insurance companies changes the rules.
In 2023, Cigna changed the way they credential dietitians. Until now, Cigna would not allow you to create a ‘group’ contract, no matter how many dietitians you had on your team. Now, Cigna only credentials dietitians who are a group practice.
Talk about a pretty stark change.
In the summer of 2023, Cigna stopped paying on all of my practice’s claims. We hadn’t changed anything we were doing. So we were stumped.
When we called, they told us Cigna only credentials dietitians who are a group.
Hmmmm. That was super odd because, until this point, their credentialing structure was very much the opposite.
But anywho!
We just did as we were told; we created a group for our practice. And all is well in our world for now 🙂
Now that Cigna only credentials dietitians who are a group, you might be a little confused on how to approach this. And like always, Amy P., The Reimbursement Dietitian, is here to guide you through this process. I created a quick little YouTube below to guide you through the process.
So even though Cigna only credentials dietitians who are a group it should not be an issue. All you need to do is use your Type 2 NPI and apply as a single-member group.
You can apply for FREE HERE if you don’t have an NPI Type 2.
Easy peasy – problem solved.
I hope this helps get you going in the right direction.
